Providing good drainage is one of the
most important rules for a gardener. It doesn't matter if you're growing
directly in the ground, or in containers. Most plants will be unhappy in
saturated, wet soils, and will not thrive if their
roots are waterlogged. Roots need oxygen too.
Planting in raised beds
can provide the drainage plants need. Or a couple of inches of small rock in
the bottom of a container will work also.
Give plants some space in
between one another...crowding plants reduces air circulation, which means that
foliage stays wet longer, and allows different kinds if molds and fungus to
appear. Proper spacing of plants can mean the difference between a major
disease problem and a minor one.
