Start Kale seeds indoors around the first
part of March, and set out the middle of April. Kale is very hardy, and will
withstand both heat and cold.
Plant in full sun, and keep evenly moist
throughout summer. Mix lime and a balanced fertilizer into the soil before
planting. Kale is not a fussy feeder, and will tolerate many types of soil
conditions as long as adequate drainage exists.
Winter crops can be
started in June as long as they are kept moist at all times. Cold weather seems
to improve flavor. Leaves are ready to harvest in 6 weeks from sowing, and are
best when young. Older leaves are tough and bitter.
